For the exhibition in February 1976, Struth decided to shift the focus of the photographic work and concentrate on the street itself rather than the figure within an urban context. 'You see how discreet, coercive and observant he is.' Thomas Struth takes mesmerizing photographs that express his belief in photography as “a tool of scientific origin for psychological exploration.” He began taking pictures in 1976, influenced by his studies with three of the most important contemporary German artists of the time—painter and mixed media artist Gerhard Richter and photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher . The idea was that these photographs contained a number of useful indications concerning the behaviour and relationships in a family. 178 x 218,6 cm. Struth’s work draws attention to contemporary structures, which he documents and examines with tremendous clarity and eye for detail. A small selection of Struth’s work was published in the collection Thomas Struth: Unconscious Places 1977–2012, introduced by sociologist Richard Sennett. Between 2009 and 2014, acclaimed German photographer Thomas Struth made eight trips to Israel and the West Bank. He studied at the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf. His photographs of landscapes, streetscapes, and even museum visitors, might easily be interpreted as scientific studies that seek to map networks of historical, functional, and social interrelationships.
