David M. Green 1. Males have a darker throat than females. The Fowler’s Toad is found mostly in the eastern United States and barely in southern Canada.

It has a short, rounded snout and a round body with a light stripe down the middle of its back. The three toads in northwest Iowa also have very distinctive calls.

The Fowler’s toad is a large yellow, green or brown toad with a light stripe down the middle of the back and large dark blotches, each of which has three or more “warts.” The white belly lacks dark spots. Historical versus Current Distribution.

The Fowler’s toad has a small distribution in southeast Iowa, and the American toad is common throughout the state.

Fowler’s Toads jump more like a frog then hop like the American Toad does. Its has skin folds on the side and a small tympanum. Females are larger than males.

Since it’s nocturnal I was lucky to see it during the day. Its range consists of New Hampshire to eastern Texas, eastern Arkansas, Missouri, and southeastern Iowa, eastward into Michigan through Ohio, and West Virginia to the Atlantic coast.
